Prems back into one-dayers
Birkenhead hosted Auckland University in the Jeff Crowe Cup 50-over match, with the visitors getting off to a flyer scoring 76 for 1 from the first 12 overs.
The introduction of the spin of Aaron Jeavons curbed the run rate, and he bowled a tidy spell along with fellow off-spinner Akash Christian. At 166 for 3 at the 34-over mark, Auckland Uni were well set to post a score of around 280, but the Birkenhead team fought back well with some tidy cricket out in the field from the likes of Ullrich Boshoff, back from a stint in Australia, Matt Latham and Mark Tulloch.
The Uni innings fell away to be all out for 224, with Evans and Tulloch both claiming 3 wickets and Jeavons the most economical of the bowlers.
It seemed a chaseable total, but the Uni team has one of the better bowling attacks in the competition, so it was always going to be a good test. The Birkenhead top order didn’t contribute enough runs though, with Ullrich Boshoff (44 from 60 balls), the only batsman to spend some time at the wicket.
Poor decision-making led to the fall of most of the batsmen, while Christian can count himself unlucky with his LBW decision. Barrington Rowland, Uni’s player/coach wrapped up the innings with some accurate leg spin taking 4 for 11, to go with his well compiled 51 runs.
Birkenhead will have to win their remaining two games to have a chance of making the playoffs.
Meanwhile, they look forward to their quarter final this Wednesday in the T20 competition, away to Waitakere.
Good luck to Adam Baard, and Ullrich Boshoff, who represent Auckland in their relative age groups this week.
