Premier Men kick off season with OD win against Ellerslie

October 11

After both teams suffered complete washouts on the season’s opening day Harcourts Cooper & Co Birkenhead City defeated Ellerslie  in what was effectively the 2014/15 curtain raiser for both sides.

Ellerslie newcomers Ben Jackett (4/27) and Matt Coxon (2/43) caused problems for the Harcourts Birkenhead top order with our boys slumping to 52/5 after 20 overs.

From there new Birkenhead skipper Mark Tulloch and Jaycob Curtling combined to rebuild the innings in an 84-run sixth wicket partnership before Curtling fell for 37. Tulloch struck 3 fours and a pair of sixes before he was dismissed for 47 and a late cameo of 27 from just 15 balls from Allan Plant helped City reach 201/9 from their 50 overs.

Birkenhead’s bowlers got off to the best start possible when Mark Tulloch took care of Ellerslie’s new professional Simon Lambert with the very first ball of the innings.Ellerslie wasn’t able to recover from that early blow as Tulloch and Aaron Jeavons combined to take six wickets, and the home side slid to 106 all out with none of their batsmen reaching 20.
Harcourts Cooper & Co Birkenhead City 201/9 (M Tulloch 47, J Curtling 37, B Jackett 4/28) defeated Ellerslie 106 (M Tulloch 3/16, A Jeavons 3/26) by 95 runs.
