Premier Men earn outright against ECB Nov 1,8
The Harcourts Cooper & Co Premier Men declared at their overnight total from November 1 leading into day 2 on November 8 with a 75-run lead against ECB.
Rob Evans struck with the first ball, dismissing a former Waitak teammate. But within the first hour, Birkenhead had lost two of their strike bowlers to injury, in pace bowler James Glynn and legspinner Sahil Mehta.
This left Rob Evans, Rudi Botadra, Aaron Jeavons and Terry Crabb to do the bulk of the bowling. Evans was used in short bursts and produced a man of the match performance taking 6 for 53 from his 18 overs. Evans bowled with pace, using the short ball effectively as well as getting life out of a flat wicket.
Aaron Jeavons was miserly with his offspin, taking 2 from 17 from 16.2 overs and was unlucky not to take more wickets. Terry Crabb kept things tight with 1 for 9 from 10 overs. ECB were holding on, but capitulated to some accurate bowling backed up by some good catching and fielding.
After finally dismissing ECB for 167 in the 71st over, Birkenhead required 93 from 27 overs. At 42 for 2 with Crabb and Jeavons (26) at the crease the target seemed simple, but some poor decision making throughout the middle order gave the Bays boys a sniff before BCCC finally reached the total 8 down when Rudi Botadra scored the winning runs.
It was a great achievement by the prem team to take outright points from the first round against one of the more fancied sides. The team now looks ahead to a Saturday/Sunday fixture at home versus 2-day Champions Suburbs New Lynn.
