– boys & girls school years 5 – 8
– great way to sharpen cricket skills

The indoor ball is yellow with a leather outside.

Indoor cricket ball.

Indoor Cricket is a fun and fast-paced form of the game played on artificial-grass surfaced courts enclosed by tightly tensioned netting. It’s a bit like being surrounded by a crazy-catch net!

The pitch and stumps are the same size as outdoor cricket. Like outdoor, indoor cricket involves two batsmen, a bowler and a team of fielders. With 8 players in each team, every player bowls 2 overs and bats in a partnership for 4 overs even if they get out (players lose 5 runs for each wicket lost). And because of the enclosed court, everyone is close to the action and involved in the game.

The game is brilliant for improving your catching reflexes and also your running between the wickets. Key to the game is ball placement so you will see big improvements in your batting too.

Well-known cricketers you may have heard of who have played indoor cricket include Andre Adams, Martin Guptill, Michael Bates, Scott Styris and Jeet Raval. From our own Birkenhead City Cricket Club Dylan Steyn and Nic Montgomery have represented Auckland Under 19s at indoor cricket and Nic Montgomery represented New Zealand Under 20s at the Indoor Cricket World Cup in 2014.

What time will games start? Games will start at 3.45pm and 4.45pm. All games will be finished by 6pm.

What days will games be played? Years 5 and 6 will play on Mondays.

Years 7 and 8 will play on Wednesdays.

What dates? Term 2: May 9 to July 8. Term 3 July 25 to Sept 23.

When’s practice? No practices but there will be skill sessions on game days.

Do I have to enrol a team or can I enrol by myself? You can do either. If you have a whole team of 8 who would like to play together, that’s perfect! If you can’t get a team together and want to join as an individual, that’s fine too and Planet Sports will try to place you in a team.

When do I have to enrol by? The cut-off for registrations is the second week of school holidays.

The last time Birkenhead juniors entered a team was in 2011 at the old North Harbour Indoor Cricket Centre. Do you recognise any of these players? (Four of them still play cricket for the club…)
