Junior cricket update

It’s been a while since our last update but here’s a wee catch-up ahead of the juniors’ final matches on March 25. Good luck to everyone in your last game and if there’s no report here for your team… lean on your coach or manager or send it in yourself!

Year 5 Vipers

February 26: Another tough game this week and sadly another loss, this time to Hibiscus Coast.  Blake got 3 wickets, and there were 10 runs each for both Blake and Hayden. Player of the day was Noah.

March 4: This week we played the other BCCC side, the Cobras – the top of the table. Blake shone with the ball grabbing four wickets including a hat-trick and Gabe and Pavaan got 2 each meaning the cobrads got 134/9. So that was really awesome bowling for us. Daniel also took two catches.

But we didn’t do as well with the bat only scoring 43 and losing 11 wickets however Blake and Daniel both made double figures. Living and learning.

March 18: What a fantastic game  – we all heard you talking to each other on the field and encouraging which was awesome and such a close finish. We played North Shore and scored 94/7 which was a vast improvement in the number of wickets lost too. There were 19 runs each by Noah and Hayden.  You all should be proud of yourselves and we only just lost.

Bowling, there were wickets from Paavan, Sebastian and Blake plus a run out from Blake but North Shore got home scoring 99/5. It was really an effort to be proud of.

Our last game is at Becroft Park. Good luck boys!

Year 5 Cobras

February 25:  For Game 12 the Birkenhead Cobras were away to North Shore CC Cricket Express. Captain Ben lost
the toss but got his wish to bat first anyway.
All the boys batted well with Alfie (26 runs) and Cameron (25 runs) being the top scorers. Brodie, Alfie (4), Ben (2), Ryan S (2), Cameron (5), Ricco & Ryan scored boundaries to keep the score ticking over, but the regular loss of wickets meant that the total was less than they had hoped. The Birkenhead Cobras scored 173 runs for the loss of 10 wickets, giving a net run total of 123 runs.
The first two NSCC batsmen got off to a flying start but the Cobras didn’t give up and steadily got themselves back into the game with Ricco and Ben getting a wicket each by bowling an opposition batsman. Ben also took a catch off the bowling of Ryan C, Cameron took a catch off the bowling of
Olly and Alfie took a catch off the bowling of Ryan S. Determined fielding and tight bowling put a lot of pressure on NSCC and resulted in a runout and lots of very close calls. NSCC finished on 129 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, giving a net run total of 94 runs and the win to the Cobras by 29 runs.
The main difference between the teams was the bowling – once again the Cobras gave away very few wides or no balls.
Congratulations to Ryan S who was awarded Player of the Day – great batting and bowling combined with his energetic fielding and wicket keeping – always with a positive attitude.

March 4:  Game 13 for the Birkenhead Cobras was a local derby, against BCCC Vipers. The Vipers won the toss and elected to bowl first, hoping that the dew and the long grass would slow down the Cobras batting line-up.
However the Cobras were not going to let their club-mates get the better of them and with Ryan S as captain for the day, they promptly got stuck into the Vipers bowling attack. Cameron in particular was impressive – smashing 30 runs that included 5 boundaries. The other batsmen also batted very
well with Joe (3), Alfie (3), Ryan C (2) and Liam (1) all scoring boundaries on the way to a team total of 179 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, giving a net run total of 134 runs.
The field had dried out by the time that the Cobras took the field, meaning that they had to work harder to restrict the Vipers from scoring runs. Tight bowling resulted in Alfie, Cameron, Olly, Joe, Liam, Ben & Brodie all getting a wicket by bowling an opposition batsman. Cameron also took a catch off the bowling of Brodie and Joe got a caught behind off Alfie’s bowling. Great fielding also resulted in two runouts – one to Ryan S and one to Liam. The BCCC Vipers finished on 98 runs for the loss of 11 wickets, giving a net run total of 43 runs and meant that bragging rights therefore go to the Cobras!
Congratulations to Cameron – his destructive batting combined with a wicket from his bowling, and two runout assists meant that he was named Player of the Day. He was also rewarded with inclusion to the North Harbour Dream Team alongside Alfie.

March 11: The rain won today!

Year 7A

March 18 vs North Shore
What a fantastic game it was today – the boys really did us proud, and to be honest it was the best game we’ve have seen them play!  So well done lads. Our final game is on March 25. We batted first and got off to a good start from Tom (21) … the star of the batting today was Sam Hazeldine who scored 51 not out (off 37 balls), closely followed by Mahad cruelly bowled one short of his 50 on 49 (off 48 balls).  We put on 178/4 which was awesome.

Our fielding really came to the fore today with three runouts playing a big part in reducing North Shore to 122/7. Mahad took two wickets as well as one runout and a catch so it was a great day for him and a great team effort all round meaning a great win.
Scorecard

March 11: Match abandoned

March 4:
Not the result we wanted with us scoring 96/8 off 24 and Hibiscus Coast making the runs with just under 2 overs to spare (100/7)  Mahad, Ollie and Toby all took two wickets each.
