Congratulations to Kate and Craig Hazeldine

Two Birkenhead City Cricket Club parents who volunteer across a number of teams through club and school have been acknowledged for their efforts by North Harbour Sport.

Kate and Craig Hazeldine were nominated by Northcote College’s legendary cricket stalwart Ross Parlane for the work they do for the college, helping run the First XI.

Ross said: “Craig is always first on a Saturday morning to come in and help set up the field and assist at the end of the day to put the gear away. He frequently helps to take care of the team’s transport to away games, as well as often umpiring them.”

“For the past three years they have been ever dependable and highly valuable. To top it all off, they tirelessly do the nitty-gritty job of washing all the kit”.

The two older Hazeldine boys Tom (16) and Nick (14) play in the school’s first XI and in the Cricket Blitz but began their cricket at Birkenhead and play the annual Club of Origin for Birkenhead. Sam (10) plays in Birkenhead’s Year 5 Tulloch team, which his dad Craig co-coaches with another volunteer, Warren Carter.

Kate has always been one of the club’s biggest helpers and has managed Birkenhead teams since 2003/04 season. Craig has been coaching the boys since 2005/06 season.

“We do it for the kids because without parents help there would be no college or club sport,” says Kate, who is also sports coordinator at Northcote College.

The pair won a $500 Lotto NZ Sports voucher but in typical fashion used it to donate back rugby, soccer and netballs, ball bags and cones to the college and to Verran Primary, where Kate has also been a helper  for almost 12 years.

Birkenhead City Cricket club thanks Kate and Craig for all their tireless efforts for the club too over the years. Without parents like these it’s very tough to get teams organised.
