Catchup: a few junior games
Year 5 Cobras
For Game 5, the Birkenhead Cobras travelled to Greenslade Reserve to play against Takapuna Matt Jones.
Liam was captain for this game, and he started well by winning the toss and deciding to bowl first. With a slow outfield and the long boundaries that Takapuna had set out, we figured that they must have some big hitters. However, it wasn’t to be and the Cobras were soon on top of the opposition batsmen, with their good bowling and fielding restricting Takapuna to a score of 77 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Brodie ended up getting two wickets, and Cameron, Ben and Ryan C got a wicket each to go along with the three great runouts.
Coach Aaron had been working hard on the boy’s communication and shot selection, to minimise the number of wickets lost. And it showed – no suicide runs! The Birkenhead Cobras batted very well to be always ahead of the required scoring rate. Cameron showed that it WAS possible to hit the ball to the boundary – in fact he managed it 4 times, to help the Birkenhead Cobras finish on a score of 115 runs for the loss of only two wickets.
Well done to Ben who got Player of the Day – he hit some great shots, bowled one of the Takapuna batsmen and got a run-out from a direct hit.
The game on December 10 was rained off for us.
Year 5 Vipers
GAME VS NORTH SHORE
We’re improving bit by bit every week and hoping for better results in the second half of the season when the kids get a bit more confident.
This week we spent almost as much time travelling home as we did playing the game!
We played North Shore who won the toss and put on a massive total of 151/6. We gave away way too many extras with the boys struggling with their line and length – 42 wides were bowled this day. The best of the bowlers was Blake who bowled four overs, 1/15.
McLean was the best batter with 20 runs including 3 x 4s.
Noah did well too and scored two 4s, so well done.
GAME VS ECB RAIDERS
ECB won the toss and chose to bowl and we lost too many wickets (14) to put on a fighting score – making 55.
In reply ECB only lost 8 wickets and ended on 150.
Maclean batted very well for his 24 runs including 3x4s, as did Pavan on 21 and Blake (17). So they were real positives.
Charlie (2/24 off four) and Black 3/29 off 4 were the best of the bowlers. Good effort by both Daniel and Hayden for both only bowling one wide in their four overs. Also all of our wickets were Bowleds so that is really good news – and there were only 24 wides compared to last week’s 42 – great improvement. Hang in there, boys!
Charlie was player of the day & Hayden was fielder of the day.
November 26: Played Hisbiscus coast at Birkenhead college. They scored 117/6 (James took 2/9 off 4. Shiv 2/13 off 4). We scored 120/3 with a great knock by Sam 30 from 34, Krish 18, Tiger 16 and handy contribution from James with 10 from 6. See scorecard.
December 3: Played Takapuna Dan Ter Braak at Sunnynook. We were all out for 78, and they made it – 79/6.
Under 12 girls Dragons
November 26: Highlight of the game was a great knock of 30 retired by Rebecca Nicholas. We made 112/6 against Takapuna.
In reply Takapuna made 81/7 with sisters Amber and Leyla both grabbing two wickets, and Rose and Rebecca one each. Amber’s figures were great – 2/2 off two. Another win for the girls!
NOTE: The Dragons are playing at the club on Saturday – it’s a must-win game against Cornwall Crooks (deja vu anyone?) that the girls have to win to win their grade. Come along on December 17 8.30am to cheer them on!
Nov 26: ECB Thunder won the toss and batted, scoring 123/5 (Mahad 2/5 off 3, Curtis 2/16 off 3).
In reply fell excruciatingly short… all out for 122. 🙁 Sam Hazeldine top scored with the bat with 23 from 17. See scorecard
Dec 3: Better news this week – Batting first we put on 128/7 and in reply Hibiscus Coast was 126 all out. Close!
To be honest there were no real stars with the bat – Sam got 13 and Mahad got 17.
But our discipline with the ball proved the difference – they bowled 36 wides and we bowled just half that number. Navick grabbed 3 wickets in 2 overs for 10, with no wides at all.
Tom got 1 and Tobias got 1. A great result! See scorecard
