Birkenhead junior cricket wrap 2014-2015

The club had seven junior teams pre-Xmas, two year 5s (Curtling and Tulloch, the names come from some of the club’s Premier players in case you didn’t know), two year 6s, Steyn and McConnochie, one Under 12 girls T20 side, one year 7 Premier side that played in the challenging afternoon ACA competition, and two year 8 sides, Green and Gold, who played eight games pre-Xmas, before heading off to College to join their school teams.

We also had a Year 9/10 side that played five T20 matches before Christmas, and had a number of junior players involved in the Birkenhead Year 9/10 side for the Club of Origin competition.

All of the sides, except the Year 7 premiers, the Under 12 girls and the Year 9/10 T20, played in the North Harbour Cricket competition, playing clubs from this side of the bridge. The Year 7 prems, the girls and the year 9/10 played in the Auckland competition and, of those, we had two out of three teams win their grade – the girls and the year 9/10.

We have a lot to build on next year in the juniors and already interest is growing in the game, from the Cricket World Cup. We have had some fantastic coaches, managers, scorers and umpires help out this season. Before July we would like to hear from anyone interested in being the junior operations director and taking their place on the board at the AGM in July. It’s important to have someone look after and grow the junior grades, whose numbers are down on previous seasons. It involves contacting players and schools to get kids playing the game at whatever level – there are levels for all styles of player. We need someone with fresh ideas and they will  have lots of experienced people to call on for advice. Some of our coaches have been around the club a while and are keen to have input. It’s not a huge job but it’s an important one. If this sounds like you or someone you know, please email office@birkenheadcricket.co.nz.

Good luck to everyone in their winter sports and see you at enrolments in September.
