BCCC Juniors November 21 wrap
Picture shows Ollie Leitner of Year 6 Curtling who retired on 30 this week.
There was lots of wind and lots of wins this week! This was the first of our weekends that was on-off for the senior games and sometimes off for the juniors. Frustrating! Problem is it was one of those days where you had to turn up and see how it was wherever you were playing. Quite often in Auckland some places can be bathed in sunshine while it’s pouring elsewhere – anyway let’s hope there aren’t too many days like that this summer.
Still, we had a few very good results in very trying conditions so well done. But we still need a couple of Year 8s (or year 7s) so those boys can get a game (they had to default) and the girls’ team could do with a player or two as well.
Year 5 result unknown
No report received.
Year 6 Curtling win
The players in Year 6 Curtling (named after Premier player Jaycob Curtling in case you were wondering) had their game in the morning so got the best of the weather, and even then it was a case of endurance through wind and rain.
Batting first, BCCC started fairly well with opener Connor Muirhead getting 19, but it was it was the partnership between Ollie Leitner (retired on 30) and Dominic Hawkins (retired on 31) that set the scene. Everton O’Learly also impressed with his 16* off 10 balls including a big 6 and the team ended their 28 overs on 157/3.
The Birkenhead bowlers then kept the pressure on the Takapuna Tiger Turf side and finished the job by dismissing Takapuna, who only had 9 players, for 60, in 16.3 overs. Abdur Rehman was the star, bowling two players, ending with 2/7 off 2 and also taking a fine catch. Other wickets were shared aound. A 97-run victory was worth getting wet for! The boys take on Hibiscus Coast at home this weekend. Get along and give them some support. (-info filed by Rebecca Hawkins)
Year 6 Green win
No report. Win to Birkenhead vs Takapuna O’Dowd in a game played at the notoriously cold Wainoni Park. Of note, Navick Chandra 31* retired, Jackson Walsh 18*. Bowling Jackson Walsh 3/9 off 4.
BCCC 132/9 off 28. Takapuna 125/9.
Under 12 girls Dragons win
The Dragons played at Greenslade Reserve in Northcote this week – it was a chilly, rainy, windy morning and the conditions made for a very interesting game. It was our lowest scoring match, the ball getting heavier and heavier in the wet.
Batting first the Dragons struggled through to 41/5 off 24 which was going to be a challenge to defend. But defend they did!
Rebecca Nicholas and Molly Moxley both took two wickets and Annabel O’Rourke one, but Brooke Te Wake also had a great day and she was our Player of the Day. Leyla Butt earned our Outstanding Effort Award for her fantastic run out and bravery behind the wickets.
We played hard in tough conditions to come away with a 10-run win against Cornwall Claire Crooks. (- info filed by Stacey Nicholas)
Year 7 Prems no result
Game rained off after 35 overs. Disappointing! However three of the team were in action on Sunday for North Harbour, where conditions were tough again. Travis Gower and Spike Ruffell both turned out for North Harbour Burgundy in Whangarei, where the team played some excellent to beat Northland by 7 wickets with 10 overs to spare.
Jesse Hohaia played for North Harbour Black in Auckland against Western Districts but the side was well beaten by 9 wickets. These games are warm-up matches for the District Tournaments that get played in December. (More on that next week.)
Year 7 Pacers win
No report received. Birkenhead Pacers 99/4 (19) beat Takapuna Red 95/8 (off 26) Taine Victor 3/4 off 3, Nathan Kenny 2/8 off 2. Vivek Patel 39.
Year 8 default
Team forced to default due to lack of numbers. Please, if you know any year 7 or 8 who would like to play, we have some very keen players here who want to play out their last season for Birkenhead before they go to college. Boys or girls welcome.
